What Is Involved with Skin Cancer Diagnosis?
If you notice any suspicious changes in your skin such as new moles or a marked change in size, shape, color, or texture of an existing mole, it is important to have it tested for melanoma as soon as possible. Dr. Martini will do a thorough physical examination of your skin including checking for enlarged lymph nodes, and if the mole appears to have characteristics of cancer, such as asymmetry, uneven pigmentation, irregular borders, or any other atypical signs, a biopsy will be performed. Our on-site CLIA lab and pathologist will use the biopsied skin to test for melanoma and other skin cancer types. Other factors from your medical history will be taken into account during your examination, such as a family history of skin cancer and prolonged exposure to the sun due to work or outdoor hobbies.
How Is Skin Cancer Treated?
If a biopsy comes back positive for cancer cells, we will move forward with treatment quickly so that you can achieve the best possible outcome as soon as possible. The mole and a small area of normal skin around it can be excised right in our office as an outpatient procedure. If the cancer has not spread, this may be all you need, although we recommend follow-up visits and regular self-examination as well as proper sun protection in the future.
Another treatment for skin cancer that Dr. Martini offers is Mohs surgery. With this procedure, first the visible part of the skin cancer is removed. Next, the surgeon removes one layer at a time of “normal” looking skin around the area of cancer and examines each layer closely under a microscope to check for cancer cells that are invisible to the naked eye. As long as cancer cells remain, an additional layer of skin is removed until no abnormal cells are seen. Mohs surgery has a high rate of curing skin cancer. If it is caught early on, skin cancer has a very high rate of complete recovery. It is important to watch any changes in your moles and bodily markings as well as noting when new ones develop, as early detection can be the key to a smooth and quick recovery.
