Neck Lift in Wilmington and Dover, DE

View Neck Lift Before and After Pictures

Located in Elkton, MD and Dover, DE, and serving the residents of Maryland, and Wilmington and Newark, Delaware, Replenish Cosmetic Surgery Institute performs neck lifts for those who desire plastic surgery.

To achieve the revitalized look they desire, more and more patients are opting for a neck lift. Dr. Martini addresses the needs of these patients with a delicate operation known as “platysmaplasty,” which tightens and smoothes out neck muscle irregularities; much like a girdle binds the waist. This can result in a more defined neck with an improved jaw angle, and a firm, smooth jawline.

Another method for addressing the neck is liposuction of the neck and jawline, which can be done in conjunction with a neck lift. Using just a small incision well hidden under the chin, Dr. Martini can create a nicely contoured neck and more youthful jaw. When indicated, laser treatments may also be used to tighten the skin.

Neck Lift Procedure

A neck lift involves first creating small incisions under the chin, and in some cases behind the ears, to release the skin and tighten the underlying muscles. Any excess skin is then removed to eliminate bands, jowls, and folds. In some cases, unwanted fat may be removed as well to give you a slimmer appearance. Specific locations on the muscles are then sutured to keep them in a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position that will last through healing.

A facelift is often done in conjunction with a neck lift to completely revitalize these important areas and create a more youthful, yet still natural-looking, appearance. Dr. Martini understands the fine art of eliminating signs of aging while avoiding a “fake” or “stretched” look, and he takes great care to ensure that you will receive the improvements you desire. Together, through consultation and planning that takes into account all of your concerns and questions, you will design the personalized procedure that aligns with your vision for a fresher, softer look.

Neck Lift Preparation

Every person is different in the way they see themselves, and the way they define beauty. At the Replenish Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we make sure that our patients are always fully informed and help them to set realistic expectations. Honesty and open communication are of the utmost importance as we review your medical history, go over the goals and expectations you have for your end result, and cover all safety concerns by discussing your prescriptions, lifestyle and range of activities, nutritional supplement and vitamin regimen, and more.

There are a few things you can keep in mind in order to reduce scarring, shorten your recovery time, and decrease your chances of complications. Discontinue using aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Saint John’s wort, and Vitamin E for one week before and a few days after your procedure. These act as blood thinners and could cause problems with clotting. Stop smoking and drinking alcohol in excess well in advance of your neck lift and for one week following surgery. Be sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your procedure, as remaining well-hydrated will help you to recover more quickly.

To keep your recovery as easy and comfortable as possible, be sure to follow these guidelines:

  • Arrange for someone to take you home and take care of you for at least the first 24 hours.
  • Fill your prescriptions prior to surgery.
  • Place prescriptions within easy reach of where you will be resting.
  • Keep handy plenty of pillows or a bed wedge in a nearby location so that you can keep your head elevated.
  • Consider allowing your hair to grow out if it is short in order to better hide scars after surgery.

Neck Lift Recovery

Dr. Martini takes care to see that swelling is reduced and healing time shortened by addressing the specific structures and minimizing the disturbance of tissue through his specialized techniques and state-of-the-art custom instruments.

It is common after surgery to experience bruising, swelling, tenderness, and the feeling of tightness for one to two weeks. A compression bandage is commonly worn during the initial healing stage to help keep swelling at a minimum and ensure that tissues can properly heal. Clothing should be kept loose around the neck to avoid disturbing the area.

Many patients experience only mild to moderate pain with neck lift surgery, and Dr. Martini will prescribe pain killers in order to lessen any discomfort you may feel. You may also benefit from the use of a cold compress on certain regions of your neck to reduce swelling further. When you lie down to rest or sleep after surgery, be sure to keep your head elevated. Initially, avoid as much activity as possible. Try to plan to be out of work for a minimum of the first two weeks so that you can focus on self-care. Typically, recovery can take up to four weeks, although it varies by patient and some people are fine returning to their regular work schedule after just a couple of weeks.

Scars are generally well-hidden behind the ears and under the chin, and will fade even more over time until they are often unnoticeable. Special make-up can also help to hide any scars as they continue to age and become less visible. Be sure to notify us if you experience anything unusual such as sudden severe pain, and stay on top of your follow-up visits so that our expert staff can continue to keep you as comfortable and informed as possible.

Neck Lift Consultation

Dr. Martini takes the time to get to know you and your body during consultation, which will include a detailed discussion and examination to determine your desires and the realistic outcomes of your procedure. He utilizes many techniques so that each procedure is custom-tailored to your needs, your anatomy, and your age. Communication is key, so be open and honest about your medical history, including any previous surgeries, list of drug allergies, medications, diet pills, vitamins, supplements, and herbs you are taking, even if they do not seem important. Also be sure to be frank about your lifestyle including smoking habits, the strenuousness of work you perform, exercise habits, and the importance of getting back to work.

To enhance the outcome of your procedure and meet all of your goals, Dr. Martini may suggest combining a neck lift with other procedures such as a facelift, nose enhancements (rhinoplasty), brow lifts, eyelid surgery or fat transfer to achieve optimal results. We also offer state-of-the-art laser treatments for pigmentation and skin irregularities, as well as access to our excellent skin care line.
