Located in Elkton, MD and Dover, DE, and serving the residents of Maryland, and Wilmington and Newark, Delaware, Replenish Cosmetic Surgery Institute performs liposuction for those who desire plastic surgery.

Dr. Martini has been performing liposuction for over 15 years, and his technique has continued to evolve artfully as science and technology advance. Nowadays, there is less downtime and faster recovery from liposuction than in previous years as more precise and gentle instrumentation is utilized.

Laser technology is one of the best innovations that Dr. Martini incorporates into his body contouring technique, and it allows him to achieve better, more refined results for his patients. Liposuction typically begins with laser treatment to loosen the fat and enable precise sculpting of the abdomen, flanks, back, and inner and outer thighs. Moreover, lasers stimulate the skin to contract and re-drape more effectively for a smoother result.

While this procedure is not recommended for simple weight loss, it has helped countless numbers of both men and women to finally get rid of stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to conventional dieting and exercise. Liposuction is frequently combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck. The best candidate for this procedure is a physically healthy person of normal weight with firm, elastic skin and realistic goals and expectations. Together, through examination and consultation, Dr. Martini can help you to design the body contouring procedure that will help you to look better and feel healthier.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is usually performed on an outpatient basis. There are a number of different techniques that can be tailored to your specific needs so that your procedure will be designed especially for your unique body type and goals. Tumescent liposuction is one of the more popular techniques, during which a special solution that combines local anesthetic and adrenaline called tumescent fluid is created. This fluid is inserted into the treated areas through tiny access points. It helps to numb the area, control bleeding, and reacts with your fat to make it easier to remove. The unwanted fat is then suctioned out through a blunt, tubular instrument called a cannula.

Power assisted liposuction (PAL) is a very similar procedure to tumescent liposuction, except that a powered, mechanized cannula is used. There is also the option for ultrasound assisted liposuction (UAL). During this type of liposuction, tumescent fluid is first injected and then special probes that emit ultrasound energy react with the fat to liquefy it. The liquid fat is then suctioned out through tiny incisions using a cannula.

The latest innovation of laser assisted liposuction (LAL) allows a small laser to be inserted through a little incision to deliver low energy waves that liquefy fat in targeted areas. The fat can then be suctioned out with a cannula. Laser technology also has the benefits of coagulating blood vessels for less bleeding, swelling, and bruising while causing the skin in turn to tighten and re-drape to your new fitted contour. This procedure has the potential for a much quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction, is very safe, and is associated with only minimal discomfort that pain medication can assist with. Dr. Martini will recommend that you wear compression garments after your procedure to minimize any swelling that might occur.

The type of liposuction that you incorporate into your procedure is best determined through consultation with Dr. Martini, as he has the expertise and renowned experience necessary to help you design your own personalized procedure.

Liposuction Consultation and Preparation

A friendly and knowledgeable consultation is the perfect opportunity for you to explore liposuction options further, and to discuss your goals so that you can set realistic expectations for a positive experience. Every person defines beauty in a different way, and Dr. Martini wants to listen to your ideas, goals, and concerns carefully. Good communication is the key to the best possible outcome, so you should be open and honest. Be prepared to provide your medical history, drug allergies, list of any previous surgeries, medications, diet pills, vitamins, supplements, and herbs you are taking even if they are not important. Also, don’t be afraid to be frank about your smoking habits, exercise routine, history of weight gain/loss, the strenuousness of the work you perform as well as the importance of returning to work.

There are a few things you can keep in mind in order to reduce scarring, shorten your recovery time, and decrease your chances of complications. Discontinue using aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Saint John’s wort, and Vitamin E for one week before and a few days after your procedure. These act as blood thinners and could cause problems with clotting. Stop smoking and drinking alcohol in excess well in advance of your liposuction and for one week following the procedure. Be sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your liposuction, as remaining well-hydrated will help you to recover more quickly.

To keep your recovery as easy and comfortable as possible, be sure to follow these guidelines:

  • Arrange for someone to take you home and take care of you for at least the first 24 hours.
  • Fill your prescriptions prior to surgery.
  • Place prescriptions within easy reach of where you will be resting.
  • Keep handy plenty of pillows handy so that you can keep comfortable throughout the initial recovery period

Liposuction Recovery

You should expect some bruising, swelling, and pain after your procedure. If you feel like you have lost sensation in the areas treated, don’t be alarmed. As your nerves begin to regenerate, feeling and sensation should return to normal in a short time. Swelling may linger for as long as several months. Pain medication will be prescribed to control any discomfort, however, if you begin to have sudden or severe pain, be sure to contact us immediately so we can best serve you.

The recovery process varies from patient to patient as every body is different and some people wish to treat smaller or larger areas of their body. Within a day after your liposuction, you should be able to get up and walk around. Excess tumescent fluid will most likely drain from the access points for the first day or two and you may notice a little bleeding. Depending on the number of areas treated, you may need to be out of work and away from your usual activities for the first week. Over the next two or three weeks, your treated areas will likely remain sensitive and strenuous activities should be limited. You will also be instructed to wear a special compression garment for up to a month to help ensure a good contour for your treated areas.

Following this period, you can gradually return to activities such as lifting, exercise, and sex. Avoid any high impact activities for about a month, and particularly avoid bouncing activities such as jogging for up to six weeks. These small precautions will have a positive impact, allowing you to avoid stress so that your tissue can recover and heal as fast as possible. All liposuction procedures are performed using small incisions about the width of your pinkie finger, so any scarring will be very minimal. The results of your liposuction are best seen after several weeks. Your treated areas should regain their sculpted appearance for as long as you maintain the same weight. If you gain weight, you will usually gain it in a generalized fashion in areas other than those that underwent liposuction.

Should you decide that this procedure is right for you, a surgery date will be scheduled and you will be given a full set of preparation and recovery instructions. Remember that it is important to stay on top of your follow-up visits, as we are here to help make this a positive and fulfilling experience for you.
