View Facelift Before and After Pictures

Located in Elkton, MD and Dover, DE, and serving the residents of Maryland, and Wilmington and Newark, Delaware, Replenish Cosmetic Surgery Institute performs facelifts for those who desire plastic surgery.

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is one of the most common cosmetic facial procedures and helps to return a more youthful look to the face. Performed on more than 110,000 men and women each year, the facelift addresses the concerns of the lower two-thirds of your face. It removes lax facial skin, repositions and reduces underlying excess fat deposits while tightening the underlying muscles and deeper tissues. The result is a more rested and youthful look.

Today’s facelift is even more effective, natural-looking, and longer lasting than ever before, taking away 10 to 15 years of the visible signs of aging and leaving you looking revitalized. It can also be performed in conjunction with our other procedures, such as a neck lift eyelid surgery, brow lift,  injectable fillers, fat transfer, and laser skin treatments.

Be sure to take a look at our before and after photos from past patients just like you to see for yourself the difference that a facelift can make in your quality of life.

Facelift Procedure

There are a number of different options to help tailor the facelift procedure to your unique needs. A consultation with our friendly experts at Replenish Cosmetic Surgery Institute can help to determine what is right for you and set you on the path to achieving the results you desire.

During a traditional facelift, the incisions usually start above the hairline, extend down in front of the ear, and circle back within the hairline. After the skin is released and raised from the face, a layer of tissue called the SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) is exposed. This layer is then repositioned and/or tightened, excess skin is removed, and the incisions are closed with very fine sutures.

The Short Scar S-Lift is a type of mini-facelift that utilizes a small S-shaped incision in front of the ears in order to work on the middle third of the face. It is designed to correct limited changes in the cheek and jawline areas.

The MACS-lift is a variation on the S-Lift and utilizes a permanent plastering muscle sutures technique.

Often, a neck lift is performed in conjunction with the facelift to eliminate hanging neck skin, muscular bands, and excess fat that masks smoothly defined neck contours. If just the neck lift alone is performed, incisions are confined to behind the ears or under the surface of the chin. Liposuction may also be used to remove fat and tighten the skin. Together, we will select the technique that will provide the best possible results for you as well as discussing all fees and costs and addressing your individual questions and concerns.

Facelift Preparation

Every person has a unique perspective on age and beauty. Your own goals will affect the way that your facelift is performed. We encourage you to discuss your desires honestly and listen closely during consultation so that you can set realistic expectations. Great results are achieved when there is an open channel of communication between the doctor and patient. It is important to also keep in mind that the shape of your face will partially determine the shape that you have after surgery.

Your safety and comfort are of the utmost concern to us. You should provide your full medical history, drug allergies, list of any previous surgeries or medications, diet pills, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking, even if you don’t think they are important. Don’t be afraid to be honest with us about your lifestyle including smoking, the strenuousness of the work you perform, your exercise habits, and the importance of getting back to work. We are here to listen and to help you achieve your best possible results.

There are a few things you can keep in mind in order to reduce scarring, shorten your recovery time, and decrease your chances of complications. Discontinue using aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Saint John’s wort, and Vitamin E for one week before and a few days after your procedure. These act as blood thinners and could cause problems with clotting. Stop smoking and drinking alcohol in excess well in advance of your facelift and for one week following surgery. Be sure to drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your procedure, as remaining well-hydrated will help you to recover more quickly.

To keep your recovery as easy and comfortable as possible, be sure to follow these guidelines:

  • Arrange for someone to take you home and take care of you for at least the first 24 hours.
  • Fill your prescriptions prior to surgery.
  • Place prescriptions within easy reach of where you will be resting.
  • Keep handy plenty of pillows or a bed wedge in a nearby location so that you can keep your head elevated at all times.
  • Consider allowing your hair to grow out if it is short in order to better hide scars after surgery.

Facelift Recovery

As a normal part of the healing process, you should expect some bruising, swelling, and the feeling of tightness. It may look and feel strange to you at first while your face is swollen. However, you can expect this to subside within a week to ten days. The stitches will come out or be absorbed on their own within a week to ten days as well. If you feel that you have lost sensation in the treated areas, do not be alarmed. As your nerves begin to regenerate, feeling and sensation should return to normal. Pain is moderate with this procedure, but pain medication will be prescribed to control and alleviate discomfort. However, if you experience the sudden onset of pain or if the pain becomes severe, contact us immediately.

The recovery process is different for every person, but within a day of your facelift, you should be up and walking around. Keep your head elevated at all times for two weeks following surgery. You may also apply small ice packs to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Over the next couple of weeks, your face will likely be very sensitive, and you may want to use special camouflage makeup as you heal.

We suggest that you plan to be out of work and away from your usual activities during the first week. After this initial period, you may gradually return to activities such as lifting, exercise, and sex. Avoid any high impact activities for about one month, and stay away from saunas for a few months as the steam can affect the healing process. These precautions help to ensure that you avoid stress to your scars and allow the proper time for your facial tissues to heal and recover. While there will be permanent scars, in most cases they will be small and well hidden from view. You can also expect these scars to fade as they heal over time. Your facial appearance should markedly improve over a period of several months.

Should you decide to move forward with your facelift, a surgery date will be scheduled. Prior to surgery, you will be given complete preparation and recovery instructions. Remember to stay on top of your follow-up visits, as we are here to help make this a positive experience for you.

As with all medical procedures, be sure to choose your surgeon wisely. Develop a good rapport so that you can openly discuss your concerns and particular needs throughout the process of consultation, surgery, and aftercare. At the Replenish Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we are proud of our reputation as the experts you can trust to achieve your aesthetic goals. For over 20 years, Dr. David Martini has been refining his facelift techniques. Dr. Martini’s artistic approach personalizes the procedure for each individual so that every patient looks replenished and youthful, rather than “plastic” or “windswept.” Dr. Martini’s devotion to the restoration of natural-looking, youthful faces has resulted in the utmost mastery of technique and advanced, custom-made surgical instruments. He proudly upholds a reputation for excellence and success that draws in clients who want to restore natural individuality to their faces.

Facelift Consultation

Dr. Martini’s consultation process for a facelift includes a detailed discussion and examination to determine your desires and the realistic outcomes of your procedure. He utilizes many techniques so that each procedure is custom-tailored to your needs, anatomy, and age. His techniques and procedures include: full facelift, quick recovery facelift, neck lift, laser neck tightening, neck liposuction, and liquid facelift.

A full facelift corrects sagging facial skin and muscles, removes excess fat, and reinstitutes firmness to create a more rested and vibrant appearance. In addition, the jawline and cheeks are firmed up and refined, resulting in a more youthful position. A full facelift also includes a neck lift with platysmaplasty where excess skin and wrinkles on the neck are smoothed to a finer contour. The sagging jowls and blunting of the neck angle are redefined to an elegant and slim, well-defined jaw neckline. Excess fat under the chin and along the jawline can also be refined for an even more contoured look.

Younger patients (around 50 years old) and those with less obvious aging may benefit from a quick recovery lift. Unlike the “mini-lifts” offered elsewhere, this is a substantial rejuvenation procedure that repositions the cheek in a high, natural form, reduces the nasolabial folds, and tightens the jawline. This procedure is performed via a small, well-camouflaged incision. Dr. Martini takes care to see that swelling is reduced and healing time shortened by addressing the specific structures and minimizing the disturbance of tissue through his specialized techniques and state-of-the-art custom instruments.

To enhance the outcome of your procedure and meet all of your goals, Dr. Martini may suggest combining a facelift with other procedures such as nose enhancements (rhinoplasty), brow lifts and/or eyelid surgery and fat transfer to achieve optimal results. Additionally, all facelifts are supported by laser treatments for pigmentation and skin irregularities. All of our facelift patients at the Replenish Cosmetic Surgery Institute also have the opportunity to take advantage of our excellent skin care line with the option of a comprehensive makeover.

Dr. Martini understands that improving your look is about improving how you feel overall. “If you feel that your face does not truly represent how you feel, we recommend you schedule a personalized appointment to see if a full facelift and neck lift is the answer for you,” Dr. Martini advises. “Often, no one can tell that you have had a facelift, yet you can look up to ten years younger. The average facelift can last 10 to 15 years and follow-up procedures can be performed to keep you looking your best for many years to come.”
